Privacy Policy

This policy explains what information Checkpoint collects, why, and how it's handled. Checkpoint is a 21+ social watch-party platform — if anything here is unclear, contact us at team@checkpoint.watch.

Information We Collect

• Account info: username, email address, and password (or your Google account, if you sign in that way).
• Profile info you choose to add: bio and profile picture.
• Age verification: we confirm you're 21+ at signup. We do not store your exact date of birth on our servers — only that the check was completed.
• Usage data: rooms you've hosted or joined, watch time, and session stats (like sips/hits/shots) tied to your account, used to power your own profile stats.
• Payment data: handled entirely by Stripe. Checkpoint never receives or stores your card number — we only see that a payment succeeded and a reference ID.

Video, Voice, and Chat

Camera and microphone streams connect directly between participants (peer-to-peer, WebRTC) — Checkpoint's servers only relay the initial connection setup and never record, store, or have access to your video/audio content. Chat messages sent in a room are stored so the conversation persists for people in that room, and are visible to other members of that room.

Streaming Platforms

Checkpoint does not currently store, process, or have access to your credentials for any third-party streaming service. Platform "connect" features are still in development.

Cookies & Local Storage

We use your browser's local storage to remember things like your age-verification status and last visited page — this stays on your device and isn't sent to third parties. We don't use third-party ad-tracking cookies.

Who We Share Data With

We don't sell your data. Information is shared only with the service providers that make Checkpoint work: Firebase/Google Cloud (hosting, authentication, database) and Stripe (payment processing). Each is bound by their own privacy and security obligations as our data processors.

Data Retention & Deletion

You can delete your account at any time from Settings. This permanently removes your profile, session history, and related data. Note: deleting your Checkpoint account does not automatically cancel an active Pro subscription — cancel that separately from the billing portal linked in Settings.

Children's Privacy

Checkpoint is strictly for users 21 and older and is not directed at children. We don't knowingly collect data from anyone under 21.

Changes to This Policy

If this policy changes materially, we'll update the date above. Continued use of Checkpoint after a change means you accept the update.

Terms of Service

These terms govern your use of Checkpoint. By creating an account or using the platform, you agree to them.

Eligibility

Checkpoint is strictly for users 21 years of age or older. By using this platform you confirm you meet that requirement. Checkpoint is not responsible for underage access resulting from a false age claim.

Your Account

You're responsible for keeping your login credentials secure and for activity that happens under your account. Provide accurate information when you sign up.

Subscriptions & Billing

Checkpoint offers a Free tier and a Pro subscription ($3.99/month or $29.99/year, billed by Stripe). Founding Member pricing ($1.99/month, locked in for the life of the subscription) is available to a limited number of early members while it lasts. You can cancel a Pro subscription anytime from the billing portal in Settings — cancellation takes effect at the end of your current billing period, and you keep Pro access until then. Fees already paid are non-refundable except where required by law.

Acceptable Use

You agree not to use Checkpoint to facilitate illegal activity, harass or abuse other users, or access streaming content you're not legitimately entitled to. Checkpoint syncs playback across a group using each person's own existing streaming subscriptions — it does not provide, host, or grant access to any streaming service itself.

Content & Intellectual Property

All streaming content viewed through Checkpoint remains the property of its respective rights holders. Checkpoint does not host, distribute, or reproduce any copyrighted video or audio content — it only synchronizes playback and facilitates chat/reactions between people already watching on their own accounts.

Responsible Use

Drinking- and smoking-related features (rules, "checkpoints," difficulty modes) are for entertainment among consenting adults. Never drink and drive. Know your limits — Checkpoint does not encourage excessive consumption, and Sober Mode is available to every user at no cost. If you or someone you know is struggling with substance use, the SAMHSA helpline is available 24/7: 1-800-662-4357.

Termination

You may delete your account at any time from Settings. We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these terms.

Disclaimer

Checkpoint is provided "as is," without warranties of any kind. To the fullest extent permitted by law, Checkpoint LLC is not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of the platform.

Governing Law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Florida, without regard to conflict-of-law principles.

Checkpoint Extension — FAQ

The Checkpoint extension puts your room's chat, cheers and drinking games on top of the video you're already watching, on the streaming services that don't allow outside players. Everything it does is answered below.

Why does this exist?

Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max and the rest block their players from being embedded in other websites — that's a technical wall we can't and wouldn't go around. So instead of trying to bring their video into Checkpoint, Checkpoint goes to them: you watch on the service's own site, signed into your own account, and the extension brings the room along with you.

What does it actually do?

Two things. It remembers which Checkpoint room you're currently in, and when a video starts playing on a supported service it shows that room's chat panel in the corner of the page. The panel is Checkpoint's own page loaded in a frame — the same chat, members and Checkpoint button you'd see on the site.

When you're not in a room, it does nothing at all. No panel, no requests, nothing added to the page.

What data does it collect?

None.

• It never reads, sees, or stores your password or any account details.
• It never accesses your viewing history, watchlist, or billing information.
• It never reads the content of any page you visit, and never records what you're watching.
• It does not read cookies. An earlier version of this extension checked login cookies to verify accounts; that was removed entirely, along with the permission that allowed it.
• The only thing it stores is your current room code, on your own machine, cleared when you leave the room.

What permissions does it need, and why?

• Storage — to remember your room code between pages. This is its only browser permission.
• Access to the supported streaming sites — so it can draw the chat panel there. It runs on those sites only, and only while you're in a room.

Do I have to install it?

Only for the services that block outside players. YouTube and Twitch play directly inside Checkpoint — those rooms need no extension at all. Everything else on Checkpoint works without it too; you just can't run a watch party on Netflix, Disney+, Peacock and the like until it's installed.

I installed it, but Checkpoint says it isn't there.

Check that it's enabled on your browser's extensions page (chrome://extensions or edge://extensions). A disabled extension is completely inactive, and browsers give websites no way to tell "disabled" apart from "never installed" — so to us the two look identical.

Do I still need my own subscription?

Yes. Everyone watches on their own account, on the service's own site, and the service decides whether you can play something — exactly as it would without Checkpoint. Checkpoint doesn't host, stream, rebroadcast or share any video, and it can't give you access to anything you don't already pay for.

The panel is in my way.

Drag it anywhere by its title bar, or click the — button to collapse it to a small tab. Click the ✕ to leave the room and remove it entirely. It also follows you into fullscreen, so it stays usable while you're watching.

How do I remove it?

Uninstall it from your browser's extensions page like any other extension. Your Checkpoint account is unaffected — you just won't be able to start rooms on the services that require it.
